Amidst the turmoil of intensified political attacks and fear-mongering against the LGBTQIA+ community, this session intentionally creates space for witnessing queer joy and imagining liberatory, just futures. Through the power of storytelling, a panel of LGBTQIA+ architects and designers will share their paths to authentic expression, joyful living, and equity-building within the architecture profession. Out in Architecture is a collaborative effort that amplifies diverse LGBTQIA+ voices from across the country to create a legacy of storytelling with the goal of elevating, educating, and reflecting on advancements made and continued progress we must attain to achieve justice. The 2018 Equity in Architecture (EQiA) survey and Gallup polling in 2022 showed that 7% of architects and 20% of new graduates identify as LGBTQIA+. The EQiA survey indicates a majority of LGBTQIA+ architects don’t feel comfortable sharing their gender identity/sexuality with company leadership, clients, consultants, or contractors. This session will explore how increasing visibility and community-building can begin to build just futures for the LGBTQIA+ community in collaboration and solidarity with other marginalized communities. As Audre Lorde and Lilla Watson said, “Without community there is no liberation,” and since “your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.”
