Originally constructed in 1925 as the headquarters for The Miami News, this Mediterranean Revival masterpiece
later became the "Ellis Island of the South," serving as the primary processing center for Cuban refugees from 1962
to 1974.

Today, it stands as a National Historic Landmark and a profound symbol of the strength and resilience of Miami’s
immigrant community. This tour offers attendees a "leading edge" look at how historic preservation meets modern
building renovation, restoration and structural intervention by applying technology, such as the latest forensic
engineering techniques. The session begins with a presentation on the design philosophy of the renovation,
followed by a deep-dive exploration of the building’s base, lobby, and envelope. 

Architects will gain firsthand insight into the complexities of repairing 20th-century structural steel, restoring ornate
cast stone and terra cotta, and upgrading building systems within a high-stakes, historically sensitive environment.
