Description

As environmental pressures intensify, architecture must move beyond conventional resilience strategies toward a more intentional, regionally grounded, and future-ready approach. This seminar explores how the Perkins&Will Miami studio is redefining coastal resilience through a philosophical and methodological shift—rooted in critical regionalism, multidisciplinary collaboration, and Living Design principles. The presentation demonstrates a layered, synergistic integration of landform, structure, envelope, engineering systems, and material innovation. The combined effect of these interdependent strategies produces buildings that are safer, smarter, and more adaptive than any single intervention alone. Through case studies, including a hurricane-hardened office building in South Florida and the L’Oréal Research & Innovation Center in Brazil, participants will examine how buildings can do more than withstand climate risks—they can actively contribute to healthier ecosystems, stronger communities, and more resilient futures. By integrating performance, wellness, and environmental responsibility, these projects reflect a commitment to building better: creating places that support occupant health and safety, reduce environmental impact, and strengthen long-term community welfare.  Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how to design buildings that are smart, high-performing, and future-ready—while redefining resilience not only as protection from harm, but as a paradigm shift: architecture as an agent of change, giving back through purposeful design.
