Description

Emerging designers often enter the profession with strong 3D and software skills, yet without the technical grounding needed to fully understand how buildings are assembled, coordinated, and delivered. Advanced modeling tools can create a false sense of proficiency, masking the critical judgment developed through hands-on exposure and years of experience with building systems, consultant coordination, and construction administration. When this foundation is missing, projects face increased risk—impacting documentation quality, constructability, and life-safety outcomes. At the same time, many firms are under pressure to staff projects quickly, leading to reduced expectations for early-career professionals, limited mentorship, and inconsistent QA/QC practices—when such processes exist at all. Without intentional technical training, emerging professionals are often expected to perform without a clear understanding of how their decisions affect coordination, construction, and long-term building performance. This panel explores why firms must take a more deliberate role in technical education and how clear standards, meaningful construction administration exposure, and intentionally slowing the pace of early-career progression can serve as powerful training tools. Moderated by Misha Wynn, QC Manager at Premier PM, the discussion focuses on integrating QA/QC, consultant coordination, and systems knowledge into early-career development to reduce documentation errors and minimize construction conflicts.
