Elgin Cleckley
Speaker Bio

Elgin Cleckley, NOMA, is an Associate Professor of Architecture and the Undergraduate Program Director at the University of Virginia. He leads _mpathic design, a multi-award-winning pedagogy, initiative, and professional practice. After studying architecture at the University of Virginia ('93), Fontainebleau School of Visual Arts, and Princeton University ('95), he collaborated with DLR Group (Seattle), MRSA Architects (Chicago), and Baird Sampson Neuert Architects (Toronto) on award-winning civic projects. Elgin served as the 3D Group Leader and Design Architect at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto from 2001 to 2016. This $47.5 million project created the world’s first museum and design thinking architectural space—the Weston Family Innovation Centre. Cleckley is the editor of Empathic Design: Perspectives on Creating Inclusive Spaces (Princeton/Island Press) and has published in many national and international venues. His teaching and scholarship have been recognized with UVa’s Alumni Board of Trustees Teaching Award, the PAVE Educator of the Year Award, UVa’s Public Scholar Award, UVa’s School of Architecture Research Award, an AIA Virginia Award, and five ACSA Awards. Current _mpathic design projects include the Van Cortlandt Park (Bronx, NY) African American Burial Ground (with Rodney Leon Architects and CUA), a public space for the Piedmont Housing Alliance (with Office of Things), and Miami’s Friends of the Underline.
