Description

What does it really take to build a design practice from the ground up—and sustain it? This panel brings together four practitioners who are managing independently-led and non-profit practices that are rooted in community and social justice. Through candid conversation, they’ll unpack the realities behind defining a vision, cultivating partnerships, managing risk, building a team, and balancing creative ambition with financial sustainability. From early missteps to pivotal breakthroughs, this discussion goes beyond theory to share hard-earned lessons, practical strategies, and honest insights into nurturing a practice that can grow, adapt, and endure. Following brief presentations from each practitioner, there will be an opportunity for ample discussion during which attendees can ask direct questions related to the project-specific examples provided. This is a conversation about ownership, both personal and professional resilience, and redefining success on your own terms. Whether you’re considering starting your own studio or looking to strengthen an existing one, this panel offers an inside look at the business of design—and offers a critical lens as to why BIPOC-led practices are evermore essential.
