Description

Historically, urban planning and design were shaped by male-dominated fields, producing cities structured around gender, race, and class inequities. Contemporary urban studies seek to address these conditions by designing inclusive environments for people of all genders, orientations, ages, and abilities. Still, women and gender minorities face distinct barriers within urban environments. The design of public and communal spaces can reinforce gender norms, affect perceptions of safety, and shape behavior. Shaping Communal Space: Gender Inclusivity in the Collective is a research study conducted by interdisciplinary design firm Wallace Roberts & Todd (WRT). Grounded in the firm’s planning, architectural, and landscape practice, the study examines how gender minorities experience communal spaces while identifying gaps in how design responds to their needs. The research was initiated in response to WRT’s housing portfolio, where more than 2/3 of residents identify as gender minorities. The study was conducted through literature reviews, site visits, surveys, observations, and resident conversations. Areas of investigation included safety and inclusion, gender and affordable housing, and the role of communal space in shaping belonging. The research aims to develop a practical framework for designing gender-inclusive communal spaces. This framework supports equity, improves safety and accessibility, and strengthens community well-being and empowerment.
