Description

This seminar delves into the groundbreaking research of Dr. Eric Harris on Black Modernism (https://doi.org/10.3390/buildings15142544), a multifaceted cultural and intellectual movement that bridges African American history, art, and literature in the early 20th century. Dr. Harris’ work focuses on how Black architects and intellectuals engaged with and transformed the Modernist movement, creating a space for Black voices and perspectives in a time of social upheaval and racial oppression. Through an exploration of key figures, cultural expressions, and historical contexts, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how Black Modernism challenged dominant cultural narratives and reshaped the conversation about race, identity, and modernity. This session will encourage attendees to think critically about how cultural heritage, recognitional equity, and historic preservation challenge societal norms, offering a richer understanding of both history and modernity from a distinctly Black perspective, definitely acknowledged as Black Modernism.
