Description

Across the Northeast region—from Washington, DC to New York, Boston, and Baltimore—four dynamic women have risen to lead some of the largest and most influential NOMA chapters. As regional powerhouses, leadership journeys reflect both the challenges and the transformative impact of organizational leadership as women of color in a profession where representation remains limited at the highest levels. This session brings together Allison Lane (NYCOBA NOMA), Whitni Irving (BosNOMA), Melanie Ray (Bmore NOMA), and Telicious Robinson (DCNOMA)—all current or immediate past presidents and all members of the AIA Next to Lead cohort. Through transparent, compelling dialogue, they will share how chapter leadership strengthened their visibility, elevated their professional standing, and provided a leadership pipeline not always accessible through traditional routes like the AIA. The panel will explore how managing large NOMA chapters prepared them for firm leadership, community impact, public speaking, and advocacy roles. Attendees will gain insight into navigating personal and professional challenges such as burnout, board dynamics, politics, membership expectations, and organizational rebuilding—while learning strategies for personal growth, leadership resilience, and professional success. Whether you are aspiring to lead or already serving in leadership, this session will offer tools, lessons, and inspiration to advance your impact.
