As historically Black neighborhoods are gentrified across the country, Black Churches have been approached by developers to sell their properties. Architect Donald King saw the potential for Black Churches to be the catalyst for community-based development and thus established the Seattle Nehemiah Initiative. There will be a brief introduction by Donald King about the Nehemiah Initiative and its model for preparing churches for the redevelopment process. Grace Kim, principal of Schemata Workshop, has been working alongside Donald as an architect to help support this vision and will share a recently completed affordable housing project by Shiloh Baptist Church in Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood. New Life Housing is two buildings of 43 and 17 homes located adjacent to their church site. Enterprise Faith-Based Initiatives has been providing “houses of worship with the knowledge and tools to develop underutilized land into affordable homes and community facilities.” One local church, Believers of Authority Church, a mission -based neighborhood anchor in Coconut Grove, FL, has begun an ambitious 56-unit development and will share their journey.
