Description

Standing at the threshold of LEED v5, we will reflect on our journey towards social equity within a sustainable built environment. With the help of USGBC's Social Equity Working Group, this next version of LEED has taken strides to address social impact in sustainable design robustly. Yet, as we celebrate this new milestone, we must also acknowledge the gaps in our current approach, as certain communities remain marginalized within the sustainable development discourse. We must address these disparities head-on, ensuring that all voices are heard and all communities are empowered through the built environment. How can we as minority practitioners ensure that we center equity in our work beyond universal standards and rating systems? This requires collective effort from both seasoned professionals and emerging talents within our community. Together, we can identify the missing pieces, propose innovative solutions, and advocate for change within the industry. With dual perspectives from an emerging professional and established practitioner at the center of LEED v5 development around social impact, this seminar will highlight how social/environmental justice can be better addressed in sustainable design and beyond the limitations of rating systems, while providing an overview of these topics within the context of LEED v5.
