Description

The US has a critical healthcare worker shortage, and cities like Baltimore feel the pinch. To help address this challenge and accommodate growing enrollment, Morgan State University built its new 208,000 sf Health and Human Services Center (HHSC). The building creates a new campus gateway for Morgan and builds upon the university's commitment to design excellence and making a positive impact on the community. The design process focused on creating equitable spaces, emphasizing occupant well-being, and advancing the university's goal to achieve R1 research status. The primary users of the HHSC are the School of Community Health and Policy and the School of Social Work, with additional dedicated space for Family and Consumer Sciences and the University Counseling Center. To help Morgan execute this vision, HOK partnered with K. Dixon Architecture. The two firms worked closely with the university in an inclusive programming, planning, and design process with extensive stakeholder engagement to ensure every voice was heard. During this process, the two firms also forged a long-term strategic relationship, grounded in mutual respect and shared values, that has helped foster the growth of KDA's practice and provide HOK with a trusted small business design partner.
