Karen Jordan - City of Baltimore’s Department of Recreation and Parks
Learning to swim and access to aquatic facilities is tied to social equity. Data supports this equity gap that traces back to segregated pool access and lack of investment in recreation infrastructure in certain urban areas. This equity gap is becoming more problematic too as climate change increases average temperatures globally. Refreshingly, Baltimore City Recreation and Parks (BCRP) is taking a systematic, city-wide design approach to curbing this equity gap. Teaming with a design partner, BCRP is investing in the full renovation of a series of pool facilities across the city. Each facility will offer multi-generation aquatic opportunities and collectively ensure no one in the City of Baltimore is more than a walk away from a pool facility where they can learn to swim, relax and/or exercise. This session will share the ideas, strategies and engagement that is making this important urban aquatic ecosystem possible.
