Heather Philip-O'Neal - HPP International
Rod Henmi - HKIT Architects
Michael Rogers - National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA)
Since its founding in 1971, NOMA has been steadfast in its advocacy for the rights and opportunities of all people of color, for the MA of NOMA. This presentation will reinforce the legacy by focusing on lesser known figures and the "minorities" within NOMA. The seminal contributions of Latino, white, Asian American and the earliest black female NOMA members will be highlighted and put into context of the early days of NOMA. The presenters will show how these figures played key roles in the founding and development of NOMA and demonstrate how NOMA is truly an organization of all minorities. Four NOMA council members will present these unpublicized histories of important figures. Original research will be presented, including interviews with descendants. The presenters and their topics are: Rod Henmi, NOMAC, will present on Earl Kai Chann, the only Asian American president of NOMA and will moderate the panel. Brad Grant, NOMAC, will present on Dennis Mann, NOMAC member and a key early white member who co-founded with Brad the Directory of African American Architects. Mike Rogers, NOMAC, will present on Pedro Lopez, NOMA founder and a Latino/African American. Roberta Washington, NOMAC, will present on the earliest NOMA black women members.
