Description

This project tour will explore the mixed-use PAE Living Building in downtown Portland. With design led by ZGF and PAE, the building is expected to be the first fully certified Living Building Challenge project in Portland and is designed to last for 500 years. The 58,700 SF, five-story structure includes ground floor retail spaces below four stories of commercial office space with PAE Engineers as the main tenant. The project was privately developed and funded as a speculative office building making it the world’s first developer-led Living Building. It serves as a replicable model, successfully demonstrating that market-rate Living Buildings are not only technically possible on a dense urban site, but also financially viable. A custom network of integrated mechanical systems contributes to a first-of-its-kind project that delivers superior levels of occupant comfort and productivity. In many ways, the building itself is a system all its own that tells the story of its Portland context: aspirational, progressive, and yet deeply rooted in Pacific Northwest history. The PAE Living Building seeks to pay tribute to its region’s original inhabitants through a program of art and material selection that honors and protects the natural environment they held in such high regard.
