This course will present an important aspect of the legacy of African American architect, Paul Revere Williams, the survival of his own family home as a symbol of his prolific career. Well cared for by his family until 2020, a change of ownership allowed an opportunity to fully restore the home as it completed its 70th anniversary. The Los Angeles based firm of Escher GuneWardena Architecture, known for their previous preservation projects of John Lautner’s Chemosphere, The Eames House, and other works by Gregory Ain, A. Quincy Jones, and Richard Neutra, will present details of the restoration process of the 1952 Williams Residence, which they oversaw. Following a brief historical overview of Paul R. William’s work, the preservation team will describe the methodology of restoring this iconic house, designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1976. #Blackhistory #Architecture #BlackDesignMatters #AfricanAmerican #Architect #BlackArchitect #BlackExcellence #BlackLegacy #ArchitectureHistory #LivingBlack #NOMA
