Description

In October 2024, NCARB released the Competency Standard for Architects, outlining 16 core areas of practice that reflect the knowledge and skills required for competent performance in the profession. The Council is now in the process of updating its foundational licensure programs—the Architectural Experience Program® (AXP®), the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®), and the NCARB Certificate—to better align with this standard and improve access to licensure.

This session will provide an overview of the current licensure programs, explore how they are evolving in response to the Competency Standard, and offer insights into what licensure candidates and architects can expect as NCARB re-envisions the future of licensure.

  1. Describe the complete process for becoming a licensed architect in the United States, including key steps and milestones.
  2. Understand the professional competencies expected at the point of licensure and the role of NCARB’s Competency Standard in the AXP and ARE.
  3. Explain the role of Member Boards and NCARB volunteers in developing and evaluating the Architectural Experience Program (AXP) and the Architect Registration Examination (ARE).
  4. Advise licensure candidates on what to expect for future AXP and ARE updates.
