The Multnomah County Albina and North Portland libraries are in Portland Oregon's historically Black community. The renovation and additions to both historic Carnegie libraries, completed in 2025 are representative of a larger plan for re-investment in the local community. The history of disinvestment and seizure of land from the Black and immigrant community made the design team want to create spaces that were more beautiful and more culturally reflective than anyone expected. The team created a plan for authentic community engagement through 80 individual events, conversations and focused group conversation. This engagement started at the programming phase and lasted through artwork selection during building construction. The buildings are also sustainable, LEED Gold, use locally sourced mass timber and contribute to climate justice principles which are another way of showing care for communities. This seminar will share the engagement plan, data collection and how that identity of the community was considered its biggest asset.
