Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of the Beloved Community, this session explores the intersection of design justice, community engagement, and health equity. Participants will delve into principles of design justice and community engagement, exploring strategies to promote health equity by addressing social determinants of health. The session will cover forming effective partnerships, creating inclusive well-being spaces, and using community input for design work. Additionally, participants will receive practical ideas for enhancing design work through early and frequent community engagement. Through engaging discussions, practical information, and case studies of the new Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center and Health Center in Racine, Wisconsin, participants will be motivated to embrace community engagement and design justice as critically important aspects of the visioning and design processes. The new center will house a federally qualified health center (FQHC) and the relocated City of Racine Public Health Department (PHD). It will provide comprehensive medical, behavioral, mental health, and dental care, free to all, serving as a model for holistic wellness under one roof. Join us in this transformative journey to amplify Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of the Beloved Community, where all will have access to healthier, more equitable communities.
