Description

Discover how thoughtful design can transform a community resource at Shelter KC, a nonprofit organization providing housing, healthcare, mentorship, and job training for individuals experiencing homelessness. This presentation explores the design and planning approach to the renovation and expansion project that reimagines a 23,000-sq-ft. complex to better serve its growing community. The design solution addresses the unique challenges of modern shelters, offering one and two-person respite bedrooms with private restrooms to support guests experiencing mental health crises, those recovering from medical care, individuals who may not feel safe in communal settings, and vulnerable populations. Enhanced administrative spaces provide better daylight, meeting areas, and amenities for staff. The new expansion introduces a welcoming entry, reception area, private courtyard, chapel, meeting rooms, sleeping quarters, wellness spaces, and public art installations. Rooted in trauma-informed design principles, the project prioritizes dignity, privacy, and healing to create a safe and supportive environment for all guests. Join us to explore how innovative design and community-centered architecture can uplift lives and inspire change.
