Description

January 2025, several SOCALNOMA Members lost their homes to the devasting Eaton Canyon Fires in Altadena California. The Southern California Chapter of NOMA (SOCALNOMA) rose up and organized The Altadena Rebuild Coalition to address the critical rebuilding efforts required after the devastating Fire. This coalition, comprised of Minority Organizations and professionals from the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industries, is committed to assisting Altadena's historic Black community as they recover, rebuild, and preserve their cultural legacy. Altadena holds a unique place in Southern California's history as a sanctuary for African Americans fleeing systemic racism and the harsh realities of the Jim Crow South during the early 20th century. Over generations, Altadena has flourished into a vibrant community, renowned for its artistic, cultural, and entrepreneurial contributions. However, the recent wildfires have ravaged thousands of acres, including significant portions of this historic community. The Coalition was formed to ensure this community's recovery is prioritized, its historical significance recognized, and its voices heard. The coalitions mission is rooted in three guiding principles: cultural preservation, community engagement, and rebuild support. This seminar documents the efforts to support this community through community engagement, rebuild efforts and a documentary film project in coordination with ProjectPipeline
