Description

This course offers an in-depth exploration of how "The Mad House" a creative hub in University of Lagos defied conventional architectural practices by ingeniously using recycled materials to create an innovative, sustainable building in Nigeria. Designed with shipping containers as the primary structural component, this masterpiece showcases the limitless potential of adaptive reuse. Participants will gain a unique perspective on how internal spaces were crafted from modular containers, while off-cuts from window and door openings were repurposed into doors, fixtures, planters, and cladding. The session also delves into the creative application of laterite, demonstrating its versatility in painting, insulation, wall rendering, and achieving traditional African mud wall patterns. Attendees will discover how natural concrete finishes replaced conventional tiles, recycled paving stones were transformed into screen walls, and OSB boards were used as racked seating finish. The course further explores the cultural resonance behind finishing insulation in Ankara fabric and repurposing local aluminum bowls as light fixtures. Beyond material innovation, this course examines the challenges, triumphs, and valuable lessons learned during the project, emphasizing teamwork, resilience, and the preservation of local craftsmanship and culture. This session celebrates creativity in sustainability, offering practical insights into transforming "junk" into architectural genius.
