McAfee3 Founder Charles F. McAfee, along with Charyl F. McAfee-Duncan (President, Dallas Office) and Cheryl (CEO/President, Atlanta Office), will present a powerful session on the transformative role of architecture in advancing community and social justice. The session will highlight the Lincoln Redevelopment Project in Kansas City, a flagship initiative that revitalized a historically underinvested area through thoughtful urban planning, affordable housing, and community engagement. Charles F. McAfee will discuss how the project originated in the 1970s, detailing interviews with Kansas City's most important business leaders. Notably, while the project started in the 1970s, it has stood the test of time and continues to impact the Kansas City area today, often without many knowing its architectural history; it has become a popular hangout for the downtown community. Additionally, he will share the inspiring story of how jazz singer Nancy Wilson contributed the final $500,000 to help move the project forward. Attendees will learn how this initiative serves as a model for using architecture to address systemic inequities and create inclusive, resilient communities.
