Discover how a community advocated for a HUB to meet the needs of a San Francisco neighborhood that has long been systemically neglected and historically underserved. This seminar explores how honest community engagement, thoughtful programming, innovative mass timber, and an inclusive design came together to create a community center that fosters opportunities for social interaction, health and wellbeing, and connections to nature. Participants will learn how the center's architecture was crafted to counter decades of community isolation and create a welcoming space for multiple generations that reflects the pride and worth of the people it serves. Key focus areas include: -Community engagement strategies that promote multi-generational engagement and cultural inclusion. -Design decisions that build on existing neighborhood resources and connect people with nature to support physical and mental health. -The role of exposed mass timber and material selection in creating environments that signal community value and worth. -Implementing programs that elevate and enrich people's everyday lives and sustain community. Through the lens of the Owner and Architect, attendees will gain practical understanding of how development and architectural choices can support community healing, encourage social connections, and create resilient spaces that serve all members of the community.
