Description

Urban ecosystems are complex, and as architects, urban designers, and planners, we play a critical role in shaping sustainability and quality of life at the city scale. This session explores how urban sustainability efforts - particularly those centered on equity, resilience, and environmental justice - can be effectively measured and implemented beyond the limitations of traditional rating systems. How can we champion sustainability initiatives that lead to tangible benefits for residents, particularly in historically marginalized communities? We will examine urban-scale sustainability through the lens of equity and resilience, exploring key quality of life indicators, the complexities of rating systems, and real-world strategies for meaningful impact. Through a cross-disciplinary discussion, we will highlight how architects and planners can embed sustainability into urban development while ensuring that improvements in livability and environmental performance reach all communities. Topics will include community-driven urban design, lessons from LEED for Cities, and the role of practitioners as facilitators of sustainable change. Attendees will gain insights into balancing data-driven sustainability goals with human-centered design, leveraging community input, and moving beyond certification frameworks to implement lasting change. Participants will leave this session with actionable, measurable strategies to integrate sustainability, equity, and community well-being into their urban planning and design work.
