How is your NOMA Chapter responding to members' needs? NOMA KC does it through Coffee Talks - thematic, thoughtfully facilitated, safe spaces were members and visitors share the challenges experienced in the workplace without fear of judgement. NOMA KC began six years ago as a community of architects, planners, engineers, interior designers, construction industry representatives, and others from a variety of cultural backgrounds. During the 2020 pandemic, Chapter leadership and its Advocacy Committee recognized members needed a welcoming space to openly discuss experiences with biases, discrimination, stereotyping, and professional development. The spaces and conversations became known as Coffee Talks. During Let's Talk: Charting a Path toward Better Workspaces, Advocacy Committee members will share their Coffee Talk story with the broader NOMA membership. They will also name key workplace issues and provide tools that make conversing about them easier. Additionally, they will facilitate small group discussions with participants focused on: 1) brainstorming action steps and/or tools that would improve workplace experiences; 2) exploring the impacts of desired improvements; and 3) identifying priorities for change. The conversation will conclude with a data-backed framework for change management recommended by Sophic Solutions. Participants will be able to learn and begin applying it immediately after the seminar.
