In Kansas City, Kansas, particularly in its long-overlooked neighborhoods, conversations about health have shifted. Coming out of the pandemic, trust in institutions is fragile, and communities are asking deeper questions: What does it mean to be well? Who is the space really for? And how can design support connection, care, and celebration not just clinical function? This session brings together Kia Weatherspoon (Determined by Design), Dr. Nozella Brown (Vibrant CDC Board), Rev. Tony Carter and Kim Weaver (local leaders), and Matt Kleinmann and Amber Adams (Vibrant Health) to explore how design can be a joyful, collaborative process that supports health from the ground up. Rather than focusing solely on construction or capital projects, the panel will reflect on years of community dialogue around space, wellness, and dignity, highlighting efforts like the Broderick Crawford Basketball Court, the Supper Series, Free Laundry Days, and other neighborhood-rooted events that create connection and care outside clinical walls. Attendees will learn strategies for creating spaces that feel safe, uplifting, and welcoming - especially in places where medical trauma, disinvestment, or historical harm still linger. Framed through Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) principles, the session will explore how built environments can reinforce belonging, spark joy, and reflect the wisdom and priorities of the people who use them.
