Description

At the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and The Paseo is a historic landmark that speaks to Kansas City's past and a healthier, more equitable future. Built in 1941, the Paseo Stairs were designed to connect Paseo High School (now Paseo Academy of the Performing Arts) to the surrounding neighborhood. Since then, the steep incline and iconic block lettering have been used as an informal exercise area. Unfortunately, years of deferred maintenance and neglect have led to unsafe and undesirable conditions. The goal of the project is to restore the steps to their former glory and to provide an improved outdoor experience for the local community. The development of the Paseo Steps will be a catalyst for healthy living development on and around the site. This course is a panel discussion between the design team, the local community visionary, and a public advocate. Topics include sharing the historical context of the site, exploring the collaborative partnership process, and realizing a renewed community pride and ownership of this jewel in the city.
