Humboldt Park, a historically minority and disadvantaged neighborhood in Chicago, has long faced the pressures of gentrification and displacement. As a community that has experienced decades of disinvestment, it is essential to ensure that new development serves its residents rather than displaces them. In this session, JGMA (led by Founder and President Juan Moreno) and Jose Sanchez, CEO of Humboldt Park Health, (potentially including Alderperson Fuentes, Senator Omar Aquino, & Maurice Cox) will explore how architecture and community investments and programming can reinforce cultural identity, provide essential services, and empower communities. Using the Humboldt Park neighborhood as a case study, the speakers will discuss the implementation of a wellness district, hospital, and wellness center, along with future developments including the City of Chicago Pioneer Bank Development. While architecture alone cannot stop gentrification, it can help preserve the social and cultural fabric of historically marginalized communities. With potential insights from civic leaders, this conversation will highlight how architects, planners, and policymakers can work together to ensure development is equitable, community-driven, and culturally responsive.
