Date & Time
Thursday, October 9, 2025, 2:15 PM - 3:15 PM
Description

Light Justice is the practice of planning, designing, implementing, and investing in lighting for historically neglected communities through a process of stakeholder respect and engagement. This presentation will show how lighting shapes how we perceive public spaces, influencing comfort, safety, and atmosphere. Thoughtfully designed lighting enhances the perception and the cultural vibrancy of urban areas. But there is systematic inequity to how lighting is designed and implemented. Under-resourced communities often face inadequate or oppressive lighting, which negatively affects safety, well-being, and civic engagement, particularly for marginalized communities. Addressing these issues through Light Justice ensures equitable access to well-designed quality lighting. This presentation will show how lighting has been historically weaponized to oppress Black & Brown communities, and how to correct and revitalize communities through stakeholder engagement, education, empowerment and deployment of equitable, healthy, and beautiful lighting.
