Description

Lives were lost and impacted during the racially motivated mass shooting at Tops Friendly Markets supermarket in Buffalo's East Side neighborhood on May 14, 2022. The East Side of Buffalo has suffered from decades of neglect and racist policies. Segregation and inequalities have been embedded in buildings, streets, and the city. The nation is suffering from the epidemic of hate. "Seeing Us" is the proposal to commemorate the lives lost and lives impacted as a result of the racially motivated attack. The architecture provides a site for healing and hope to the community. Furthermore, the design proposes to provide an agency to see ourselves and fight together for social justice, not only for the current community members in our time but also for audiences nationwide and future generations. The seminar will explore the process of 5/14 Memorial design, highlighting the transformative power of architecture, its unique ability to elevate awareness, mobilize communities, and inspire meaningful action. By working collaboratively with families, community members, and the 5/14 Memorial Commission, the project seeks to produce an agency for social justice, healing, and remembrance, not only for our time but also for audiences nationwide and future generations.
