Description

University students seeking design education often encounter barriers of time, cost, and expectations of assimilation to the profession's dominant culture. To enter a profession, students need education, degree completion, and mentoring to licensure in the professions. The Society We Serve initiative applies philanthropic funds to build relationships and close support gaps. This seminar includes College leadership from K-State APDesign's Society We Serve initiative, student services professionals, a faculty member champion for youth outreach, and a landscape architect/practitioner/ASLA chapter board member to illustrate the collaborative education-practice partnerships of the Society We Serve Initiative. The Society We Serve initiative aims to increase inclusion and belonging within the design professions. The initiative engages the entire College community with K-12 schools and community STE+A+M organizations for outreach. It also connects the College with prospective students and families for recruitment, fosters peer mentoring for belonging, supports faculty, provides support to identify and close financial gaps with retention scholarships, and scaffolds peer mentorship to professional-student mentorship. It does this by providing opportunities for all learners.
